I’ve been single for a couple of years now. I have the time and money to travel , but just think it would feel weird going by myself. I hope I do it.

Excellent advice! Lifelong solo traveler here, even drove 5 hours to my aunt's three days after I got my driver's license at 16. (I was a farm kid so had been driving all sorts of vehicles since age 10, so my parents were fine with it. lol) I heartily agree about walking confidently, and would add that even if you never use it, everyone should take some style of martial arts or a defense class, or even a kick boxing exercise class or anything sporty — it makes you more aware of and in control of your body, which will add to your visual confidence. ALSO my own tip… step into a store or similar to get off the sidewalk before looking at your phone or map, or acting like you don't know where you're going; you don't want to be a googly-eyed, confused tourist in plain sight!

    1. Learn what tourists usually do at the place you are visiting and do the same. This can keep you safe. I met a german girl on a greek island. She wanted to go on a hike with me.

Most greek islands aren't good hiking destinations. They are good for swimming, nightlife, and trying local food. She had heard from a female solo traveller on youtube that going out at night is not safe for women. But this is Paros I told her, not South Africa. She didn't listen.

She insisted we explore the mountains at noon, under the mid-day sun of Greece. Of course we got sunburned. Luckily we escaped heatstroke or falling off a cliff.

The island didn't have hiking trails. Just mountains with wild bushes and slippery rocks, and not a single person to hear us scream in case we got hurt. And what if one of us was a criminal.

I felt very stupid afterwards for saying yes and accompanying her. One should try to minimize suffering and trouble on their vacation, and maximize enjoyment. Learn what your destinations are good for. If you don't like nightlife why go to the greek islands? Try to learn what other visitors usually do. Do they go walking around at noon or do they stay in the shade of a cafeteria? This will keep you from doing stupid things and help you make the most out of your visit. There is no point in squeezing as much sightseeing in a day as you can if it means hardship, health hazards, spending too much time on the road to and forth, and being anxious all the time about catching the bus to cross one more thing out of your to-do list.

You are only wasting time when you are not enjoying yourself.

Honestly I hope before 2030 a phone from everywhere will work everywhere. My phone only works in the U.S. and Canada or if it will work other places I'll get charged like 19 cents/ minute. I mean in 1995 as a child U.S. long distance domestic cost 10 cents/ minute. It's not 1995 so we're not calling from the house land-line. However if you leave the country your phone oftentimes might as well be a land-line at the house in 1995 if you think about it. If the phone doesn't work well it's effectively not with you. And I'm guessing calling cards and payphones have 95% disappeared in 90% of countries by now correct???

What also might be a tip, is to take a small can of hair spray with you. Since pepper spray is illegal in a lot of countries, this might function as an alternative. Might not be as effective, but still unpleasant.

Do you think that an inexperienced 20 year old traveller should travel to South America on her own? I have heard that it is safe and done a ton of research on how to stay safe (in Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia and Argentina) however I cannot shake the fear and maybe I am being really stupid.

Athens, Greece has plenty of daytime flashers, and some opportunistic gropers, good lookin ones too, but it's safe to walk alone at night when their all tucked up in bed with their mummies.

Traveling solo, I tend to stay solo on my travels/adventure. How do you mingle, most others are in their group or partner?

Wear an imitation simple gold wedding band. Shows your married, and it’s not flashy and even if you’re mugged it’s no big deal to lose.

i didn't care enough for others to discourage them from repeating my mistakes … rather i wanted them to do what i did so that i didn't appear such an 'anomaly'. but what i did wasn't black and white, nevertheless.

I’m 21, I’m still living in my parents home. However I buy everything for myself and I even buy things for my parents and family. I want to travel to Brazil to stay with a family I know there. They are so inviting and tell me I am welcome to stay there and ask when and if I’ll come. My parents are very scared of me going there but I know it’s okay and I can do it and they really think they can tell me I’m not allowed to do things! I’ve bought my plane ticket this is my first time ever travelling alone, didn’t tell my parents yet it’s for September 27 somebody give me advice help me or something 😭 I’m only scared about my parents and don’t know how to talk to them

    John 3:16-21

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

That was very useful thank you very much

I have just started traveling alone and I got rubbed twice in Paris which was terrible experience. When I was shopping in market people there saw how much money I had in my wallet so they followed me and took my money
I recommend to everyone to keep some amount hidden somewhere.

Learn how to run 300 metres fast, if you can.
Learn self- defence- ask someone male to practice with ( how to kick in the %^'d!).
Wear sunglasses if it doesn't make you stand out ..
Be a grey / gray (?) person – no bright colours ( neutrals) , wear ' smart casual' or buy cheap clothes same as locals are wearing.
Avoid eye contact when walking in cities & don't stop if anyone you don't know speaks to you – in English especially.
Ask women for directions – in a shop, hotel, not on the street.
Never go out alone esp.if female after 10 pm.
Don't wear your Rolex ( & fakes?) in big European cities .

    Some excellent advice here.

As a fellow solo traveller I'd add one more tip: If someone you don't know asks you where you are staying, you can give them the name of another location, some distance away from where you really are staying. I've heard stories of people being stalked by strange and sinister cars, suddenly appearing outside of their accommodation. I don't know if the stories are true but it's better to err on the side of caution.

Also, you don't have to tell people that you're travelling alone, if you feel uncertain about doing so – nothing wrong with telling a small fib or two, if it keeps you safe. As the lady said, "Listen to your intuition".

Stay safe, everyone and happy travels!

Travelled many countries by myself never really had a problem but always took notice of what the locals told me, was always aware of my surroundings, didnt go out at night. Had an incident when I had to travel through a Middle Eastern country for transit, two men come and escorted me off the plane as women dont travel by themselves in their country, asked if I had anything to cover my cothes I was wearing jeans lucky I had a full length trench coat which i used, they took me to a ladies only rest room told me not to leave, then come and escorted me onto the plane when it was ready, was safe but will not being going through that country again.

I know a female who went by herself to a Middle Eastern country, went alone to the pyramids and found a tour guide there – a man who volunteered to take her around, he then said he would take her to a local restaurant for dinner she agreed, the hotel staff told her not to go but she went. He picked her up from the hotel passed the restaurant they were supposed to be going to and took her to a remote house where he kept her in a locked room for several days abused her, got her key and got all her things from the hotel, on the day she had to fly out he took her to airport kept with her until she had to board gave her her passport finally and she left. She was so happy to get back to her country that she told the police they virtually said they couldnt do anything about it, took a while to recover from it she now trys to block it all out just says she was lucky not to be killed.
